Left-handed pitcher Leo Lerner talks baseball with Blizzard's Andy Johnson

Leo Lerner is a sophomore pitcher at Cretin-Derham Hall who has been in the Minnesota Blizzard program for four years.  The prep lefty took time to answer some questions and give us an insight into his career and time with the top club program in the state of Minnesota.

Inning 1

Andy Johnson: Describe how you became a member of the Blizzard and how it has helped you develop as a pitcher.

Leo Lerner: When I was 12 I got a card in the mail asking me to try out so I decided to and fortunately I made it and being on the Blizzard for so long has let me work on my pitching form and mechanics much more and has also gave me the chance to learn and throw more, good off speed pitches.

Inning 2

AJ: What are your strengths on the mound and what do you have to work?

LL: I think that I have pretty good control on the mound, enough to consistently throw my off-speed for a strike. Lastly, my fastball tails and isn't terribly slow so that helps. I think that I could work on not letting up as many 2 strike hits and being able to always have a tight, fast curveball.

Inning 3

AJ: Adam Barta said you are the type of pitcher who can beat anybody you face.  What is your mentality on the mound?

LL: I always just try to get one guy out at a time because I feel that if I just focus on the guy at the plate instead of worrying about the guy on deck, I can be more efficient and effective to the guy at the plate.

Inning 4

AJ: You have three years left of high school ball, what sort of goals do you have for this season and for the future?

LL: Well my freshman year I went to Highland Senior High and was on varsity for part of the season but for my sophomore year I transferred to Cretin-Derham Hall so my goal is to just make the team because they have a very strong program.

Inning 5

AJ: Who has helped you most in your career?

LL: I would probably say my dad just for teaching me the basic rules of the game and supporting me all the time or all of the Blizzard coaches I’ve had because they’ve been helping me just keeping reaching the next level of baseball.

Inning 6

AJ: Do you have any players you particularly like watching?

LL: I like Clayton Kershaw because he’s a lefty and I like how he goes to Africa in the offseason to help out.

Inning 7

AJ: Describe one of your favorite moments so far in baseball?

LL: A couple years ago I played Babe Ruth baseball and we won state and we got to go to Kansas for a week to play and I made the All-Tournament team.  That was pretty awesome.

Inning 8

AJ: Do you have any baseball superstitions?

LL: Not really.  I’ve never really understood what superstitions are about so I’ve never done them before.

Inning 9

AJ: What is one word that describes you and why?

LL: Lucky.  I say lucky because that’s how I feel after finding Blizzard and just having the chance to play baseball all year-round with close friends I’ve made over the years.
