Minnesota Blizzard Blue and Black - 16u 2016 Champions and Runner-Up

The Minnesota Blizzard program earned it's first and second championship of the 2016 as well as earning a Runner-Up in the 3rd Annual ScoutStop August Select held in the Twin Cities.

The ScoutStop sponsored tournament, which featured 50 teams from Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Washington and Thunder Bay (CA), is the top club tournament in Minnesota.  Teams competed through the 4-day event at host sites including Siebert Field, Northwestern College, Miesville, Elko, Wintercrest, Concordia St. Paul and Century College.

In the varsity division, the Blizzard Elite went 7-0 going including a tough win against the Minnesota MASH 6-0 in the first round of playoffs..  Sam Carlson struck out 12 in his six frames of work.  In game 2 of bracket play, Tommy Springer, Brock Anderson and Nick Juaire combined to no-hit Northstar striking out 10 in a game shortened 9-0 victory.  In the semi-final game, Sam Carlson hit a walk-off home run against TCBA to send the Blizzard to the finals where they beat Nothwest Elite (WA) 5-2 behind a two-hit performance by Nick Onomiya including a 2-run triple.  Cole Albers threw 88 pitches in quick work of a very good Northwest Elite offense.  Cam Kline came on for the final five outs for the save.

In the 16u division, all three Blizzard 16u teams (Blue/Black/Gold) made the playoffs before 16u Blue took home the championship beating Blizzard Black by a narrow 3-2 margin.  In an extra-inning affair, the 16u Blue made use of some bad luck when a throw deflected off Bryce Lovcik's helmet after a bunt play that eventually scored the winning run.  Gavin Baker was the starting pitcher and Will Frisch picked up the win in relief.  Tyler Brown and Kathan Decker pitched for the 16u Black and were dominant through 7+ innings despite getting the hard luck loss.

This was the Minnesota Blizzard's 60th and 61st tournament title since 2003 and the first time the Minnesota Blizzard has won the August Select tournament since 2014.

This weekend, the 13u, 14u and 15u teams play in the 4th Annual ScoutStop Labor Day Tournament in the Twin Cities.
