Tier 1 Performance - Strength

Tier 1 Performance with Cody Beam

The Minnesota Blizzard program announces partnership with Tier 1 Performance

Tier 1 Performance, led by owner and lead trainer Cody Beam, is teaming up with the Minnesota Blizzard to provide strength and conditioning programs starting in January 2016.

The Blizzard Baseball Academy will be putting in a fully-functioning weight room into their facility in Vadnais Heights in addition to its current Elite Pitching arm care area.  This addition, coupled with Viverant, the top physical therapy clinic in Minnesota, will make the Blizzard Baseball Academy one of the most well-rounded, all-inclusive baseball academies in Minnesota.

Beam, a former infielder and pitcher, played at DI Dallas Baptist University and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2013.  He is a Coon Rapids, native and is working toward a master’s degree in Kinesiology at Minnesota.

I have been in the business of baseball-specific strength work for one year and have seen very good results in that short time. I only work with aspiring baseball players, with the goal of developing stronger, more athletic, explosive, and intelligent athletes. I understand each athlete has different needs based on their movement patterns, stabilization and mobilization, and overall physical development. It is with this approach, I train each individual athlete accordingly.

This is my full-time job and I take it seriously. My strength program is a great platform for me to reach out and mentor athletes within that very critical age range of 12-21. Being a positive influence on the baseball players I work with is as important as the strength program itself. I believe I have an advantage, being 24-years old, in that I can quickly relate and connect with today’s young baseball players, while still being able to provide leadership and mentorship. I make it a point to go to summer games, talk baseball and more during training sessions, check-in to make sure our players are eating the best they can and be there to answer any questions that might come up.

Nutrition goes hand-in-hand with the training. I am not affiliated with any supplement company, but I understand the demands lifting and top-notch training puts on the body. Proper nutrition is vital for maximizing physical development, and I want to give every athlete I work with the knowledge they need to get the most out of my program.

Structure of Tier One Performance’s Program:

Warm-Up (5-10 min): This is a dynamic warm-up with built-in mobility emphasis to make sure each athlete's body is warmed up and ready to lift.

Strength Work (30-45 min): We will be doing barbell, dumbbell, and a variety of other lifts. Perfect form takes precedence over everything else. We will not load an athlete until they are comfortable with the movement, and after we are confident they understand how to move within the exercise.

Arm Care (10-15 min): Arm care is one of the most over-looked characteristics in the game of baseball. For those who are introduced to arm care/shoulder rehab, it's usually after an arm injury. These exercises are specific to the muscles that make up the rotator cuff and surround the scapulars. I have our athletes doing these exercises while healthy to promote durability and to help build arm strength. These exercises are unique, specific, and important to baseball because the act of throwing a baseball is a very unnatural, violent motion.
